Welcome back to campus for the 2022-23 school term! My name is Dr. Thomas Tucker and I am both humbled and honored to serve as your new principal. I have over 20 years of experience coupled with a collaborative spirit. Our Assistant Principal, Mr. Cano, is my thought partner and co-collaborator. We are both committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to rigorous and relevant instructional programs. In addition, we plan to bridge the gap between home and school by increasing parent engagement through our signature family nights for learning programs, which will roll out this fall. This year, we aim to make our campuses feel like a second home for students and parents. To achieve this, all hands must be on deck as we create a true “Community of Learners.” Let’s get ready to roll up our sleeves and work tirelessly to guarantee that our students have a competitive edge in the global market economy.
This school year, our teachers and support staff will implement a new, high-quality English language arts curriculum that addresses the academic gaps caused by the pandemic. In addition, our school community plans to implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) across our campuses which will teach our students positive behaviors and expectations as preventative measures. Our newly formed PBIS Committee will also routinely look at behavior data to plan interventions and multi-tiered levels of support for our students. Finally, our 2nd Street Campus will pilot a new middle school program that will allow students to make new friends, talk to different teachers, and expose them to the academic demands when transitioning to high school.
In addition to the district initiatives, our campuses plan to align instruction and increase writing opportunities in every content area. This concentrated effort will help improve our student population's writing and critical thinking skills. We will host several academic competitions primarily focused on English, math, and science throughout the school year.
This work cannot be done alone. First, Ms. Valerie Martinez will be our amazing business manager; she is committed to ensuring that information is accurately communicated with our great community. Second, Ms. Karen Valle will serve as our parent coordinator; she has already discussed ways to reengage our families. Last but not least, Tammy Cabrera is our very knowledgeable instructional coach; she will assist us as we evaluate our campus-wide instructional program to optimize student achievement and teacher output. We are ready to serve and are dedicated to positively impacting the Boyle Heights community.
To help our families with the new changes that will be taking place this year, we have included: our school calendar, key dates, information about uniforms, documents to enroll your students into the All-Stars Afterschool Program, our family handbook, and an invitation for your students to meet their teacher on August 12th. Please read the information, and if you have any questions, please contact our 2nd Street office at (323)780-8600 or the Breed Street office at (323)780-8300.
To end, we would like to take the time to thank all of you for your unwavering support throughout these years. Our students and their families make us who we are, and as a result, you will always be at the core of our decision-making. As you will soon find out, many of you who completed surveys or gave the leaders feedback will come to see that your voices have been heard. Please join us in making this year memorable for your students. If you have any suggestions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
